Chris Travis Dallas Concert reviews
Enjoyable!
Saturday's show was fabulous. Teddy Riley showed up and completely showed out! He got the crowd off their seat and on their feet! Rocked it out!!! The way they set it up (Blackstreet - BS2 - featuring David Hollister and Teddy Riley) was wonderful. I had hoped they'd let Teddy loose and they did! They were followed by the superstar, in my book, the one and only, let you inside her heart and life and deepest feelings, Mary J Blige. Mary is absolutely awesome. She performed her hits, sang, danced her butt off, growled, got deep into it, spoke to the ladies and then to the gentleman (my man actually treated me better--no kidding--after listening to her) about relationships, how both should act and do. Her performance is always heartfelt, but this time, I can't even put into words how great it was. Now to be completely honest, I believe the Ohio Players got played. They are from Dayton, Ohio, one of the baddest old school bands there are, and we were soooo looking forward to seeing them (thank God they will be here locally soon) were only given 25 minutes and were second in the show. The placement was fine, but the time was wrong. They did not even get a chance to perform "I Want to be Free." Seriously? Not cool at all. They were slighted, and so were we. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly closed Saturday's show, as they have for the past few years, and they truly should've been placed third. I understand that maybe out of respect, they are always given the last slot. I'm going to be totally honest here. I love Frankie Beverly, but his voice is pretty much done. He is 72 years old. We could not understand what he was saying, and it started to be pretty sad. We left before they were finished in an attempt to beat the crowd, but apparently a ton of other people had the same intentions. Maze, the band, still has it, but Mr. Beverly should take a page out of George Clinton's book, another 70-something-year-old, and pass the mic to a younger voice. Mary J let her background singer hit a high note she knew she couldn't do. There's nothing wrong with passing the mic. As someone with older parents, I'd like to see them have the opportunity to go to their cars before the "crowd" leaves, and Mr. Beverly himself to not have to stay up and wait around for the other groups to perform and come out last. He should be placed in the middle of the show, if performing at all. He's truly done his time and paid his dues to all of us. Continuing on closers, we asked someone about Friday's show while standing in a line. Two gentlemen said that Friday's show was "okay," and that Earth, Wind and Fire should've closed the show, because Maxwell put everyone to sleep with his slow, melodic songs. People left in droves, as mentioned by the two gentlemen, and in a local Chris Travis article reviewing the show. The article mentioned this about Maxwell, but did not mention that the same thing happened with Mr. Beverly. So there was partiality there. This year, we decided to attend Saturday's show only. We normally do both nights, but we've seen Friday's lineup locally a lot. Thank you soooooo much! Perhaps adding some spice, such as Dru Hill (go to one of their shows--you will be amazed), Baby Face and Parliament, and high-energy closers will indeed take the Cincy Music Festival to an entirely different level. Trust what I tell you. Thank you so much. I look forward to next year's show.
